This signed photograph was taken by Charles Lickfold duirng the 1880s. It shows the Tin Darwaza or triple gateway in Ahmadabad, the Sultanate capital of Gujarat. Built by Ahmad Shah I, the Tin Darwaza formed an integral part of the urban plan of his new capital begun in 1411. It straddles the main arterial road through the city which runs from east to west from the city boundary, past the tombs of Ahmad Shah's queens, the sultan himself and the congregational mosque, to the palace and the private mosque of the sultan at the far end with the Sabarmati river beyond. The Tin Darwaza marked the entrance point to the city's maidan or square over which the palace apartments faced. It is therefore not only an impressive monument to the might of the Sultanate power, it also separates the palatial zone of the city from the urban environment beyond.
